Program Long Title

Minor in Global Arts and Visual Culture

Program Description

The Minor in Global Arts and Visual Culture exposes students to western and non-western visual cultures from a broad, multicultural perspective. Students who complete the minor will expand their breadth of knowledge of art and visual culture beyond the traditional Eurocentric “canon,” develop intercultural competencies, and consider how art was rarely the product of a single culture working in isolation. Through a focused investigation of the visual traditions of civilizations that are often marginalized in mainstream art historical narratives, students will examine the values, attitudes, and beliefs of peoples from across the globe, as well as consider how their own modern values, attitudes, and beliefs may or may not be reflected in or influenced by these diverse visual cultures. Moreover, this minor by its very nature examines art and visual culture from multiple perspectives and requires students to make connections across different fields of study and to understand the linkages between them.
